ABOUT US
Northwest Family Biological started in the great Pacific Northwest by long time owl pellet
collector, Michael Parsons. Growing up in the small town of Hood River, OR, there was
never a lack of scenic attraction. Between beautiful Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, amazing
waterfalls, hiking trails, etc, wild life became his passion. Specifically the Tyto Alba,
commonly known as the Barn Owl. While studying the bird migrations and collecting the
pellets, Mike realized that many old barns and out buildings were dilapidation and falling
down, causing owls to lose their dwellings and safely nest. Adding another feather to his
hat, Mike decided to travel to numerous states, erecting barn owl boxes.
A barn owl box creates a safe space where the owls can live peacefully, while they clutch
(raise their Owlets) 1-2 times a year without the fear of predators. The barn owl population
has been declining over the years, and like Mike always says and lives by, “Always do your
part”. The barn owl box program is a testament to that. The barn owl boxes not only create
positive population numbers with these owls, but also creates natural rodent control . A
single Barn owl family can eat up to 6,000 mice, voles, and other rodents a year.
Our Origins
Northwest Family Biological was founded in the picturesque Pacific Northwest by Michael Parsons, a dedicated owl pellet collector with deep roots in the region.
Growing up in the small town of Hood River, Oregon, Michael was surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including majestic Mt. Hood, stunning Mt. Adams, and an abundance of waterfalls and hiking trails. These natural wonders sparked his lifelong passion for wildlife, especially for the Tyto Alba, commonly known as the Barn Owl.

Our Mission

While studying bird migrations and collecting owl pellets, Michael noticed a troubling
trend: many old barns and outbuildings were deteriorating and collapsing, leaving barn owls without safe places to nest and raise their young.
Motivated to make a difference, Michael began traveling to various states, constructing barn owl boxes to provide secure habitats for these remarkable birds.
The Importance of Barn Owl Boxes
Barn owl boxes are essential for giving owls safe spaces where they can live peacefully and raise their young—known as owlets—one to two times each year, free from the threat of predators. The barn owl population has been declining over the years, but as Michael often says, “Always do your part.” The barn owl box program embodies this philosophy,
supporting population growth and offering a natural method of rodent control. Remarkably,
a barn owl family can consume up to 6,000 mice, voles, and other rodents annually,
helping to maintain ecological balance.
